Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians honors late country star Toby Keith with donation to foundation

The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians and its Chairman Darrell Mike joined fans in honoring the late country star Toby Keith, who passed earlier this month at the age of 62 after bravely battling stomach cancer.

The tribe donated a symbolic $1029 to the Toby Keith Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting and creating no-cost housing for pediatric cancer patients.

Back in May of 2021, Toby Keith supported the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians by graciously agreeing to headline the inaugural concert for the tribe’s then-new outdoor venue, Coachella Crossroads.

The event drew close to 10,000 fans as it was the first live music event with an audience in California since the COVID-19 pandemic started, according to the tribe.

“Toby was a friend to me, the tribe, and beloved throughout the community,” said Chairman Darrell Mike. “He was an artist of enormous talent and generosity who brought people together at the tribe’s Coachella Crossroads Multiplex Event Center and brought joy to everyone he touched with his music and his personality. We are all grateful for his time on this earth and know that his spirit will continue through the work of the Toby Keith Foundation.”

Keith was scheduled to return to the Coachella Crossroads for “A Salute to Heroes” show during Veterans Day weekend 2022, but he had to cancel the tour after his cancer diagnosis. Blake Shelton filled in for Keith for the show.
