Suspect in custody after standoff in Palm Desert; lockout lifted at nearby school

A suspect in custody after a burglary call turned into a standoff that led to a brief lockout in Palm Desert Wednesday afternoon.

The incident started at around 1:41 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to the 43000 of Elkhorn Trail regarding a burglary in progress investigation.

The suspect ended up barricaded inside a home in the area of Indiana Avenue and Elkhorn Trail. Numerous deputies surrounded the home and a standoff situation was underway for a little over an hour.

Deputies conducted a search of the area and the suspect was located and taken into custody without incident.

DSUSD spokesperson Mary Perry confirmed that Gerald Ford Elementary School was temporarily placed on lockout after being advised by local law enforcement. The lockout was lifted at around 3:15 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time.
