Now’s your chance to own a little bit of Palm Springs history.
On Feb. 25, the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation will be giving away “retired” seats that haven’t already been donated to other theatre groups and non-profits.
Anyone interested in taking a seat should come to the Plaza Theatre at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive on Sunday, February 25th between the hours of 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. A signed release form will be required, and people should provide their own dolly or cart to remove the unbolted chairs from the theatre.
The historic Plaza Theatre, once home to several film premieres & screenings, nationally broadcasted radio theatre programs, and “The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies,” is one of Palm Springs’s most iconic buildings.
Built in 1936, the structure has inevitably deteriorated over the years and is currently undergoing construction thanks to the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, which managed to raise $16.5 million to restore the beloved building.
The foundation’s goal is to replace and repair all systems, seats, sound, and lighting to provide the theatre with modern facilities and adapt the structure to meet current ADA requirements. Plans call for a reduction in the total number of seats, and the new layout will accommodate slightly larger seats with more legroom in addition to expanded ADA-compatible seating areas.
Sunday’s event is the public’s last chance to see the historical Plaza Theatre before the restoration is complete sometime in 2025.
