Aberdeen: Neil Warnock in frame for interim appointment but Neil Lennon ruled out

Neil WarnockNeil Warnock has been linked with Aberdeen

Neil Warnock is one of three candidates in the frame to be appointed interim Aberdeen manager until the end of the season.

Warnock, 75, was most recently at Huddersfield Town and has had spells at Crystal Palace, Queen’s Park Rangers, Leeds United and Middlesbrough.

Aberdeen are hopeful of making an appointment next week, but Neil Lennon, Jack Ross and Alex Neil – linked with the job long term – are not contenders for the interim role.

The club are going through a full review of their football operations from academy to first team, working with elite performance consultants.

First-team coach Peter Leven took charge of the squad following Barry Robson’s sacking on Wednesday and led the team for Saturday’s game against Celtic.

The Pittodrie side are eighth in the Scottish Premiership, two points off the top six.

‘It smacks of them not knowing’ – analysis

Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller on Sportsound

I would hope the interim manager would understand he wasn’t in line for the job, just in case he put together a good run of results.

It gives them time to find the right person, but fair enough, but the whole consultancy thing depresses me. It smacks of them not knowing. What they’re saying is the club has been in the mire.

You’re supposed to know your job. These people in charge are supposed to be the consultants – they are charged with appointing managers. If they don’t know what they’re doing and have to get consultants in, that doesn’t sit well with me.

Do they not take responsibility? They have appointed these managers and it hasn’t worked out. It doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that the next manager is going to be the right man.
